Understanding Bereavement & Loss

Grief is a deeply personal experience, and there is no right or wrong way to respond to loss. You may experience sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, relief, anxiety or a mixture of emotions that seem to change from day to day.

Loss can affect concentration, sleep, relationships, confidence, and your sense of identity. Counselling provides time and space to talk openly about the person, relationship, or situation that has been lost, helping you feel heard without pressure to move on or feel a certain way

Different Types of Loss

People often think of bereavement as the death of someone important, but loss can take many forms. Relationship endings, family changes, health difficulties, loss of work, loss of independence, miscarriage, and other significant changes can also bring feelings of grief.

Sometimes a loss is expected; at other times, it happens suddenly and can feel particularly difficult to process. Counselling can help you explore the meaning of the loss, the impact it is having on your life, and the emotions that may be emerging.

When Grief Feels Overwhelming

Grief can sometimes feel all-consuming. You may find yourself avoiding reminders, struggling to cope with daily tasks, feeling isolated from others, or wondering whether what you are experiencing is normal. Many people worry that they are grieving in the wrong way or that they should be coping better by now.

Counselling offers a confidential space where these thoughts and feelings can be explored with care and understanding, helping you develop greater compassion for yourself during a difficult time.

How Counselling Can Help

Counselling cannot remove the loss, but it can provide support as you learn to live with it. Talking with someone outside your immediate family or friendship group can make it easier to express emotions that may feel hard to share elsewhere.

Together, we can explore memories, feelings, practical challenges, and the changes that grief has brought to your life. Our approach is gentle, collaborative, and responsive to your individual experience, recognising that grief unfolds differently for every person.

Our Approach

At Active Listening Therapies, we believe people need understanding rather than judgement when they are grieving. We offer a calm, compassionate, and confidential space where you can speak openly about your loss and its impact on you.

There is no expectation to have everything figured out, and no pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready. Our role is to listen carefully, support you sensitively, and help you find a way of carrying your loss that feels manageable and meaningful over time.

Taking The First Step

Reaching out after a bereavement or significant loss can feel difficult, especially when you are already carrying a great deal emotionally. You do not need to know exactly what you want to say, and you do not need to wait until things feel unbearable before seeking support.

Whether your loss is recent or happened some time ago, we are happy to answer any questions and explore how we may be able to support you.
