Starting counselling can bring up questions, especially if you have never experienced therapy before. Our FAQs provide answers to some of the things people often want to know before taking the first step.

What Is Counselling?

Counselling provides a safe and confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with the support of a trained professional. It is not about being told what to do or judged for what you are experiencing.

Instead, counselling offers the opportunity to better understand yourself, recognise patterns, explore your strengths, and consider the choices available to you. Everyone’s experience of counselling is different, and sessions are shaped around your individual needs and circumstances.

Do I Need a Reason To Start?

People come to counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific challenge they want support with, such as anxiety, stress, loss, relationships, or life changes. At other times, people simply feel that something does not feel right or that they would like space to reflect.

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. The first step is simply starting a conversation and exploring whether counselling feels like the right support for you.

What Happens in The First Session?

The first session is an opportunity to talk about what brings you to counselling, ask questions, and begin getting to know each other. There is no expectation that you need to share everything immediately or know exactly what to say.

We will discuss how counselling works, what you would like support with, and whether we feel we are the right fit for your needs. Building trust takes time, and we work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Is Counselling Confidential?

Confidentiality is an important part of counselling and helps create a safe space where you can speak openly. What you discuss in sessions remains private, with a few important exceptions relating to safeguarding and serious concerns about safety.

We will always explain confidentiality clearly at the beginning of counselling, including what information may need to be shared and why. Our aim is to create a relationship based on trust, professionalism, and respect.

How Long Does Counselling Last?

The length of counselling varies depending on your circumstances, goals, and what feels right for you. Some people benefit from short-term support focused on a particular issue, while others may choose longer-term counselling to explore deeper experiences.

We do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach. We work collaboratively with you, regularly reflecting on your progress and considering what support feels most appropriate at each stage.

Do you offer face-to-face and online counselling?

Yes. We offer both face-to-face counselling from our Newark office and online sessions, allowing you to choose the option that feels most comfortable and accessible.

Some people value the dedicated space and connection of meeting in person, while others appreciate the flexibility of online counselling. Whichever option you choose, our approach remains the same: providing a confidential, supportive space where you can feel heard and understood.

How do I get started?

Taking the first step can feel daunting, but you do not need to have all the answers before getting in touch. Sometimes, simply recognising that you would like things to feel different is enough to begin a conversation.
