Trauma & Difficult Circumstances
Difficult experiences can continue to affect the way you think, feel, and relate to others long after the event has passed. Counselling offers a safe and supportive space to explore these experiences at your own pace and begin making sense of their impact on your life

Understanding Trauma and Difficult Experiences
People respond to difficult experiences in different ways. What feels manageable for one person may feel overwhelming for another, and there is no right or wrong reaction. Trauma can be linked to a single event, a series of experiences or situations where you felt unsafe, powerless, frightened, or deeply distressed.
You may notice strong emotional reactions, anxiety, numbness, irritability, difficulties with trust, unwanted memories, or a sense of being stuck. Counselling provides a confidential space to explore these experiences with care, understanding, and without judgement
When the Past Affects the Present
Many people seek counselling because they notice that past experiences continue to influence their present life. Certain situations, places, relationships, or feelings may trigger reactions that seem stronger than expected. You may find yourself avoiding reminders, feeling constantly on alert, struggling to relax, or experiencing emotions that feel difficult to control.
Counselling can help you explore these patterns, understand how your experiences may be connected, and develop greater awareness of what helps you feel safer and more grounded in everyday life.

Emotional & Physical Impact
Trauma can affect both emotional and physical wellbeing. People often describe feeling exhausted, disconnected, overwhelmed, anxious, or unable to switch off. Sleep difficulties, tension, changes in appetite, concentration problems, and emotional numbness are also common responses.
These reactions are not signs of weakness; they are often understandable responses to difficult experiences. Counselling offers space to talk about the impact of what has happened and to explore ways of responding to yourself with greater compassion, understanding, and care.
How Counselling Can Help
Counselling is not about forcing you to revisit experiences before you feel ready. It is about creating a supportive relationship in which you can explore what feels important and manageable for you.
Together, we can work towards understanding the impact of difficult experiences, recognising your strengths, and identifying what may help you feel more secure and connected. Our approach is collaborative, compassionate, and paced carefully, recognising that healing is rarely a quick or linear process

Our Approach
At Active Listening Therapies, we believe safety, trust, and choice are especially important when working with trauma and difficult experiences. We provide a calm, respectful, and confidential environment where you can decide what you want to share and when you want to share it.
There is no pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready. Our role is to listen carefully, support you sensitively, and work alongside you as you develop greater understanding, confidence, and emotional safety.
Taking The First Step
Reaching out for support after difficult experiences can feel daunting, particularly if you have spent a long time coping on your own. You do not need to know exactly what you want to say, and you do not need to have a clear label for your experience before seeking help.
Whether you are struggling with the effects of a recent event or experiences from much earlier in life, we are happy to answer any questions and explore how we may be able to support you.
